Dressage saddles were designed to really support and help aid the rider to help enhance and further their flatwork. Dressage saddles tend to offer a deeper seat than GP/VSD and Jumping style saddles and are straighter cut with larger knee blocks to help position the rider deeper in the seat and vertical (shoulders, hips, ankles)
Dressage saddles are the trickiest of all saddle styles to choose as there are so many variations to think of. First and foremost is the fit for the horse, then it is a case of finding what the rider likes e.g. deep seat, narrow twist, forward balance point, large or smaller knee blocks, close contact, monoflap, continental style, English style, high cantle, low cantle the list is endless! We highly suggest first getting a feel for what you like as a rider, this can even help by visiting our used saddle shop in Burnley, Lancashire and simply sitting in different dressage saddles to find what is comfortable before embarking on finding the one to fit the horse.
In our experience Thoroughbred horses tend to need a more angular shaped tree and plenty of panel support with full front gussets (FFG) and a drop panel (DP) due to their naturally angular sleek physique. Some saddle brands such as Albion offer Thoroughbred (TB) specific trees in their saddles to suit this shape. For specific advice our team of experts are on hand to help at saddlefitter@saddlesdirect.co.uk
Some saddle brands such as Albion, Ideal, Black Country, kieffer, jaguar, Harry Dabbs and Passier offer Narrow seat (NS) specific trees. In our experience we have also found that the continental style saddles, with a forward rider balance point, tend to have a narrower twist and seat feeling for the rider. These brands would be e.g. Amerigo, Equipe, Prestige, Antares, Voltaire, Devoucoux, Hennig, CWD and Luc Childeric.
This depends on your plans for the horse, if your aim is to expand your flatwork and you have little to no intentions of any jumping or cross country we would say a dressage saddle would help you as a rider aid your position for harder work medium trot and extensions. However, if you like to partake in a variety of activities including flatwork, hacking, jumping, fun rides, cross country etc we would say a general purpose (GP) saddle would be a more suitable option.
