For a happy and healthy horse its vital that your chosen saddle fits correctly. A saddle that fits well will allow your horse to achieve their maximum potential no matter what you are doing. If you are in any doubt about the fit of your saddle its important to consult a qualified saddle fitter. We have listed a few guidelines to help you.

Expert Advice

Correct Seat Size

It is important that the saddle is the appropriate size for the rider in order for it to be supportive and comfortable. The size of the horse will of course determine the maximum size you can go up to. The panels of the saddle must not extend past the last rib on your horse, this area is not strong enough to support the weight of a rider and increased weight and pressure can cause sores and pain.

Correct Width

Your saddle should be the correct width to sit level on your horses back. If your saddle tips forward or down at the front it may be too wide. The saddle leaning back making the pommel higher than the cantle would mean it was too narrow.

Clearance Over Withers

To make your saddle comfortable for your horse to wear the saddle should not make contact with the spine at any point. You should be able to have 3-4 fingers clearance between the withers and the pommel of the saddle when girthed up. This would reduce to 2-3 fingers when the rider is seated.

Panels and Shape of the Tree

If fitted correctly the panels of your saddle should follow the contours of your horses back. For example a horse with a very straight back will require a saddle with a flat tree and straight panels so it will not rock on your horses back. A curvier shaped back will require a curved shaped tree.

Correct Seat Size

If your saddle is badly fitted you will see sores, rub marks or white hairs in the saddle area. You may find they buck, rear or bolt. They will become grumpy when the girth is done up or may just become reluctant to work. They don’t like the saddle going on, the rider getting on or may become difficult to handle. For happy horses and happy riders a correctly fitted saddle is a must.
