Prepare for WINTER with our 5 Top Saddle Care Tips

Prepare for WINTER with our 5 Top Saddle Care Tips

If you are one of the all weather riders who continues to brave the weather and ride during winter or alternatively, if you hibernate and don’t look at your saddle for 5 months we have 5 top saddle care tips to keep your saddle healthy this winter!

1. Dramatic change in temperature can affect your saddle and tack the most it is really important that if your saddle does get soaked to the bone out in a downpour to store it in a warm tack room, ideally with a de-humidifier to take the moisture out of the air gently. The worst thing you can do is leave a wet saddle in a cold damp climate, this encourages mildew and mould which could lead to leather rot. In the same principal you don’t want to take a wet saddle into a hot environment such as a central heated house as this could dry the leather out too quickly leading to cracks and tears.

2. If you have been out on a frosty morning galloping through the woods and managed to come by an extra thick layer of MUD our best quick cleaning solution we have found is the NAF Sheer luxe Cleanse & condition. This will help clean all the dirt while softly nourishing the leather at the same time.

3. If you manage to dry your tack gently it will need some nourishment after the harsh encounter with mother nature. Think of leather as a skin, it once was, it needs looking after. You need to replenish the nutrients taken out of it by the cold/wet/damp/snow/frost. We recommend cleaning with natural soap and warm water, then FEED IT! Leather balm are BRILLIANT products for helping to really feed and nourish dried out tired leather. The feed will get into the depths of the fibres and the balsam will then help in the road to recovery.

4. Let’s talk Oiling…..It has come common place to LATHER and even sometimes SOAK tack in Neatsfoot Oil to try and soften extremely dried out leather. This believe it or not is going to do the EXACT OPPOSITE to what you want! Neatfoot oil it large quantities actually seals the edges of the leather leaving the dried out fibres inside and actually promotes rot as the leather ultimately dries from the inside out leaving cracks and breaks. That said it is not the work of the devil using oil! In small doses little and often it will soften the leather as intended but we mean little. If it soaks in first coat leave it! Leather by nature as a skin takes in everything it is given and uses as required.

5. This one may be a no brian-er but it is still the one that could be most beneficial to keeping your saddle in top condition….Storing on a correct saddle rack with a protective cover over. This will minimise the risk of damage to your saddle and regulate the temperature with the cover on so while not in use it won’t be getting hot/cold/damp etc.
