Is my horse in discomfort? Is his saddle fitting properly? Part 2

A horse who is confident with their saddle, what a great thing to see, they are happy, and you are happy and confident. There is no other object in this world that unites animal with human. Together we move, sweat, have blood filled muscles and that saddle is the only thing that unites us as one moving team. Together, a partnership, a team. All these pointers indicate discomfort, anxiety, pain memory. You should also consider your physio, farrier, vet, dentist and any other of our partners in horse care as to find the route of discomfort. It could be as simple as the browband being too tight, we see it often, head shaking, ears being pinched. you should be able to get a couple of fingers under his browband. If too tight, or bit straps too short expect these behaviours, but what a simple fix!

Maybe your girth isn’t the best…. maybe it has elastic on only 1 side. These girths will make your horse uneven in their shoulders and wither area. The saddle will give to that side always, you might unknowingly find yourself correcting it and stand with more weight in the other stirrup to pull saddle back over…. ouch! Try to use a girth with very firm 3ply elastic on both sides, or none at all. Take a look at the Saddles Direct Anatomical Girth with its strong elastic on both sides.  This girth is shaped with an anatomical arc which contours forward and around the horses elbows to allow the saddle to be properly positioned behind the horses shoulder blades. I know we make do and struggle with funds…. if you do have a single sided elastic girth swap it over every other time, your horse will be grateful.

And while we are at it, stirrup leathers…if they are the thick leathers ones, I don’t want to say older style but you know what I mean, swap them over every month, one will get longer than the other, it’s natural to be one sided. Either by horse movement or by rider they can become uneven which in turn can be transferred on to the horse and make them build up more on one side. Swap them over!

Did I mention your riding? ops, don’t hate me but…. are you wonky, does your hip collapse? When was the last time you had someone watch you ride, it doesn’t have to be an instructor, ask someone at your yard. Are you passing your weaknesses onto your horse…? It happens. Years of always riding like that, injury, lack of confidence. I get a lot of back pain, I brace for it to happen, ready for the shooting pains. Not even saddle related but it does pass on to our horses. We can work on ourselves, strengthen our core and leg muscles. Our arms even, think elastic, holding a baby, firm but gentle. I like to do breathing exercises when riding into his stretches when I first get on. In for 5, out for 7. Mental preparation is key to helping with anxiety. Set achievable goals and always try to end on a good note. Riding comes easy to some, to others it’s scary, full of what if’s and we end up blocking our own riding and generally making a mess. Well I do 🙂

It’s not easy. But having a properly fitting saddle is one of the most important things when building bonds with our horses. One less thing to worry about. I hope you found this useful, I deliberately try to be light-hearted about it, use layman’s terms, add a bit of humour. It doesn’t mean I don’t take this seriously, it’s just that we have a wide audience, some new, some young, some of you might know all this already! but it’s good to have a freshen up. As horse owners we all want what’s best for our horses, for them to be happy in their work and confident with the tack we use. Ultimately it makes us better riders and a better team. Next time I will talk through and make a video of how to take a wither tracing. As we do a lot of online trials it can be useful to see what we are fitting with photos but also with a tracing.

Stay safe everyone, enjoy your horses and check in on our Facebook page. We have activity books every week for children, funny videos and try to help keep spirits up. Give your horse a squeeze from me and see you next week! Sarah x
