Cob Horses - All You Need To Know | Saddles Direct

Cob Horses: The Ultimate Guide

Cob horses are often thought of as a breed of horse, however, according to the British Show Horse Association, they are in fact a type of horse, as opposed to a breed of horse. The pony-looking horse is incredibly popular, and even has its own annual show, Cob of the Year!

What is a Cob Horse?

As per the description provided by the British Show Horse Association, they describe a cob horse as follows: “A short-legged animal, with bone, substance and quality, capable of carrying a substantial weight. The cob should be well-mannered and ideal for nervous or elderly riders. Cobs should have sensible heads, (sometimes Roman nosed), a full, generous eye, shapely neck, well muscled… and with a well-defined wither.”

In terms of cob horse characteristics, they’re more often than not under 16 hands of horse riding height and can be described aesthetically as similar to Shire or Clydesdale horses, due to their plentiful manes. Cob horses can be found in a wide variety of colours and patterns.

What is the Difference Between a Gypsy Cob and a Gypsy Vanner?

Both Gypsy Cobs and Gypsy Vanners are the same as an Irish Cob, with this type of horse introduced mostly by the travelling community in Ireland. Historically, Irish cobs worked tirelessly as they pulled wagons and carts across continents such as Europe.

In the modern era of today, Irish cobs are used frequently in horse events and remain as a popular element of the traveller community in parts.

Are Cobs Good First Horses?

Cobs are commonly used for the purpose of providing someone with a first horse, especially children. This is due to the fact that they are typically very calm in terms of temperament as well as being smaller than many other types of horses.
