A day In a Life Amerigo

Equestrian Life Feature

Since its creation in 1998 the Amerigo Brand has been developing the statement of excellence in all its products with founder, Peter Menet, at the forefront of design and innovation.

Peter Menet: The Designer of Amerigo Saddles

Peter Menet, 61, is one of the most sought after designers in the saddlery world. Peter has worked with amateur and professional riders across the globe to maximise comfort and performance for both horse and rider. Based in Switzerland, Peter’s education is in marketing textiles but he always rode on an amateur basis on his family horses, which were mostly show jumpers.

Peter said: “My interest in saddle design started in 1982 when I became commercial chairman of a famous Swiss Saddlery called P.A Spirig. The Amerigo brand is a result of collaboration with our friends from Selleria Equipe. 21 years ago a phone call from Selleria Equipe in Italy to Menetsattel AG in Switzerland heralded the beginning of a very special relationship, and the birth of the Amerigo saddle line.

“Our knowledge of traditional Swiss Saddlemaking (Springtrees/woolflocked French Panels) enables us to design and manufacture a unique product which is the last of its kind because of very difficult manufacturing processes. The technical base of our saddle system is Swiss. The tremendous manufacturing skills are Italian. It is a unique collaboration between the two ingredients.”

The quality and function of Amerigo Saddles is reflected in the tremendous success at world-class level in all classical disciplines of equestrian sports. Olympic Games, World-, European- and National Championships, as well as six Worldcup final victories and an enormous amount of Grand Prixs, have all been won in the Amerigo saddle system over the years (Amerigo proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018).

Peter explained: “Designing saddles means you put the horses’ needs and comfort first. If you do not understand the basic biomechanics of the horse you are unable to create a functioning saddle.

“It is all about bringing the essential things together in one product:

– Understanding of the basic biomechanics of the horse in its natural way; then adopting it for the equine sport (rebalancing and comforting the animal)

Interpretation of the riders’ aspects:

– Natural balance based on gravity (mainly hip position on the horse)

– Optimizing ergonomic aspects of the riders’ biomechanics to guarantee the most efficient actions in any situation in the shortest possible time

– Quality and functionality of the saddle for horses’ and riders’ comfort and wellbeing

“The hardest situation for us is when the quality of the horse is much better than the technical and physical skills of the rider. Acceptable results can still be achieved even with a not optimal saddle situation accepting the minor abilities of the rider. When working with top riders every detail counts and is highly appreciated.”

A typical day for Peter:

0700 – 0800 – Checking emails on our technical hotline together with my wife Lisa. Every day we get emails from dealers or consumers with technical questions, usually with photos and videos. Lisa normally answers the same day.

0800 – 0900 – Meeting with our office staff to organize new orders, saddle deliveries and adjustments of the day before.

0900 – 1200 – On the road following a precise plan calculated by the support of GoogleMaps. Usually I meet 6-7 horses in the morning (orders, checks, deliveries and also trouble shooting).

1200 – 1230 – Lunch Break; mostly fresh salads, no sandwiches.

1230 – 2100 – Meeting another 10 – 12 horses in the afternoon and evening – Peter’s day typically involves driving 400 – 500 km!

Every detail passes through the expertise of Peter who declares: “We are really satisfied with how solidly Amerigo has grown in these 21 years. The great results achieved confirm to us that our design and manufacture philosophy is appreciated by equestrian community worldwide. We make continued investment in R&D and strive to constantly improve our products”.

Sold in nearly twenty Countries worldwide, Amerigo saddles are today a household name in the international equestrian world and are enjoyed by a wide spectrum of riders from all disciplines, from top International Riders through to dedicated amateur riders of all levels, who appreciate the comfort, precision fitting and the improved performances of their horses.

The current saddle collection consists of over 50 saddles in different models, available in many different versions for almost infinite options.
