5 Reasons to have your saddle checked, pre-season

With the new season just around the corner, we’re all starting to get a little excited!

The sun is shining, the shop is bustling, saddle consultations are in high demand and saddle trials are going out by the truck load.

It’s fair to say, everyone’s beginning to have a new spring in their step after what feels like an eternity of a winter.

Which is why we thought now would be an ideal time to reinforce the importance of having your saddle checked.

Weight Loss

If your horse has been turned out over the winter months, the chances are, your beloved may have lost a little weight in preparation for the spring grass, which is why it’s all the more important to have your saddle checked, particularly if you’re competing this year.

Horses change shape all the time, dependent on a variety of reasons and different circumstances; fitness, musculature, weight, fewer competitions, training schedules and after a season in the stables. Training schedules may have been interrupted due to the winter weather, which collectively can cause long-term impact on your horses conditioning and performance.

Competition Time

Whether you are competing at Elementary, intermediate, advanced or at novice level this year, performance is key! Your saddle can do one of two things, it can be a help or be a hinderance.

A correctly fitted saddle is essential to ensure that your horse has optimum comfort, freedom to move and develop the correct muscles. Just like any other sport, a happy horse performs better!

As well as your horses’ health and performance, it’s equally just as important that you as a rider fit in the saddle as perfectly as you can to suit the style of your riding body shape and size to ensure you are in balance and not dictated to sit ‘in the horse’s way’

Optimum comfort fit and stability go hand in hand when it comes to competing, which is why a FREE saddle consultation wouldn’t go a miss.

“I’m having a saddle fitting nightmare”

At this time of year, we frequently hear riders in all different types claiming to have “a saddle fitting nightmare” especially after the winter period, namely due to the reasons we’ve just covered and because in general, the majority of us having busy schedules. Understandably, a saddle check-up is not always convenient or at the top of our list of priorities, then before we know, the new season has sprung up on us.

Our saddles begin can begin to feel a bit unsturdy, our horses shape may have changed a little and generally speaking, the saddle just doesn’t fit quite right, which isn’t ideal when we’re itching to get out in the field, focus flatwork or begin prepping for the show season.

Tree too wide

Naturally, we all want to the best by our horse and on many occasions we serve customers who have purchased a saddle with the belief a wider tree will give their horse more room in the withers/shoulders. And while their intention is noble, this often can back fire.

When a saddle is too wide, not only can it be too wide at the front, it can also sink down over the withers, causing the saddle to feel out of balance by making the pommel lower than the cantle thus putting more pressure over the front of the tree as opposed to a saddle with a properly sized tree. This can potentially be damaging not only to your horses back but to your overall performance as well.

Saddle Balance

Any saddle that sits either too low in the front or the back will cause you both problems. The horse will feel it because the saddle is sitting proportionately lower and will carry a disproportionate amount of weight compared to the other panel areas. You as the rider will also feel it too, in one or more of the following ways:

  • Feeling as though you’re sat in a chair seat
  • Feeling too much pressure on the pubic bone in the front of the saddle
  • Thigh blocks interfering with your legs
  • Feeling as though you’re pitched forwards

The list is by no means exhaustive and as we continue to draw on the importance of horses’ health, we are continuing to offer FREE saddle consultations at Crow wood Equestrian to all of you lovely riders out there.
