You either love a clear out, or you hate it, there is no in between! Go through that dusty smelly pile of rugs, you might just find some hidden gems and save you some pennies next autumn instead of buying new have them washed/repaired and re-proofed.
Hoarders hear us out, sometimes you just have to bin them not ALL rugs are salvageable, if it looks like it’s been through a shredder…it’s bin fodder! Same applies for exercise boots, leg bandages etc. Go through your grooming kit, any brushes that look like they have alopecia or products that are so old the lid no longer comes off or dried to a crisp, please put them in the bin! Just remember to recycle where you can, we like the be eco-friendly wherever possible. Anything that’s in good condition that you have no longer a use for sell them, remember any saddles you no longer need we may be interested in.

We recommend first thoroughly washing your brushes with soapy water, rinse out, then soaking in some pet/animal friendly disinfectant.
Zoflora pet friendly is a fab anti-bacterial/disinfectant product which won’t break the bank (not sponsored just a genuine recommendation!)
We know, WHAT A CHORE, but now is the perfect time right with all that excess time. Properly too not just a wet wipe and go – don’t act like you haven’t! same as tack cleaning you need to remove the dirt with warm soapy water, feed, then polish. Don’t forget boots are leather too so treat them the same and they will last longer feed them with the same products you use on your tack and you probably won’t even need the shoe polish!
Now is the perfect time to take a step back from the usual day to day hustle and really reflect on what your goals are and what really makes you happy. Some of us can all be guilty of spending way too much time in the arena boring ourselves, and more importantly our horses to tears.
On the other hand, some can also be guilty of putting off the “hard work” for a quick hack down the road. Both are great activities to do in moderation, find the right balance for you and your horse. If your goal is to ride more completely, even non professionally or “amateur” you don’t always need to be pounding the school. You can easily get in some great training on the ground. Never underestimate the benefits of lungeing, long reining, equi-band/pessoa type training, and a stress-free hack all invaluable in their own way. Again on the flip side if you have no intentions of competing in any way you don’t need to spend hours and hours hardcore training, try once or twice a week either riding in the school or groundwork to keep the correct foundations but get out exploring your local bridleways/xc courses/fun rides.
Decide on what it is you want to do, remember what others do with their horses might not work for you and yours. We have created an example 2021 goals checklist and a blank version for you to fill in with your own goals below:
